Overview
Fibromyalgia is an overwhelming debilitating illness that is not well understood among the medical community. In an interview with 26 physicians, they reported being frustrated by a lack of knowledge about FM, not being able to answer patients' questions, and the lack of treatment options.1 The call for enhancement in education and care in the area of FM is not only coming from healthcare professionals, but also from patient advocacy groups such as the National Fibromyalgia Association and government institutions such as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.2,3 Primary care clinicians are in a key position to recognize and treat patients with FM. Incorporating a stepwise approach (see Table 1) when treating patients with fibromyalgia will aid clinicians better manage patients.4 Accordingly, CME can provide the knowledge platform for primary clinicians that is necessary to fill the gaps in knowledge and clinical practice, allowing them to provide the best possible care and improve overall outcomes for patients with FM.
