Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the clinician will be able to:
- Develop a differential diagnosis for PCOS among women with irregular menstrual menses and specify the defining criteria for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- State essential laboratory tests used to distinguish PCOS from other causes of irregular menses.
- State appropriate laboratory methods used to measure and identify potential causes for hirsutism.
- Discuss the associated increased risk for type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease in PCOS patients and appropriate management strategies.
- Devise a therapeutic plan for the clinical manifestations associated with PCOS.
